Named after French botanist Pierre Magnol. Fossilized specimens of Magnolia have been found dating back to 20 million years ago, and plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae date to 95 million years ago. |

In Indonesia and Thailand the flower is used with Jasminum sambac as flower garlands for brides at wedding cermonies. In China the flowers are used for e.g. Yulan tea. |
